Military backpack is commonly called a rucksack, ruck, combat pack, or military pack. The exact name depends on its design and intended use.
In official military terms, you’ll also hear names like modular lightweight load-carrying equipment packs, assault packs, or service packs.
What Backpack Does the Military Use？
The military uses different backpacks depending on the mission, environment, and amount of gear needed. Common types include rucksacks, assault packs, patrol packs, and specialized packs for medical, hydration, or communications equipment.
For shorter trips or quicker moves, soldiers often grab the smaller 3-day assault pack. Special units sometimes use specialized options, but the MOLLE II setup is still the everyday standard for most troops.
What Backpacks Does the British Army Use?
The British Army mainly relies on large Bergens (Virtus Bergen,Virtus Daysack)—those big 80-100 litre rucksacks from the PLCE and newer Virtus systems. They are usually in Multi-Terrain Pattern camo, come with side pouches, and handle heavy loads for longer marches or deployments.
For shorter patrols they use smaller daysacks or assault packs that clip onto the webbing or body armour. The Virtus setup is the current go-to for most troops, while older PLCE gear still shows up in training.

- Pack heavy items close to your back: Place heavier gear near the center of the backpack, close to the back. This helps maintain load balance and makes carrying the backpack more comfortable.
- Organize by frequency of use: Put frequently needed items such as water, snacks, maps, or emergency supplies in easily accessible pockets or compartments.
- Protect sensitive gear: Keep electronics, clothing, and other moisture-sensitive items in waterproof bags or compartments when possible.
- Secure everything: Use compression straps and internal compartments to prevent gear shifting when you move. Check the fit: After packing, adjust the shoulder, chest, and waist straps to make the weight feel stable and comfortable.
What Color Backpacks Are Authorized With OCP Army？
When wearing the OCP uniform, over-the-shoulder backpacks and similar bags are generally authorized in black, OD green, OCP camouflage, or coyote brown.
